Fredericksburg TX Vacation 2004

In July, 2004, my husband and 18 month old Erin and I went to a beautiful town in the hill country of Texas called Fredericksburg. It was founded by Germans a long time ago and still retains a lot of German charm. The boyhood home of Lyndon B. Johnson is near there, as is Luckenbach, TX, made famous by that country song back in the '70's. We stayed in a small cabin about 8 miles from Fredericksburg and had the most relaxing time. There are three cabins on like 20 acres of wooded land surrouonded by farms and a deer preserve across the road.

This is Gary and Erin enjoying the peace and quiet on the front porch of our cabin.

That little stool where Erin is resting her sippy cup brings back a lot of memories. At 18 months, Erin was saying 1-2 word phrases, but she could babble up a storm. During our entire weekend stay, she would climb up on that stool, point her finger in the air and and wave her hands emphatically, all while babbling incoherently for several minutes. Gary and I had no idea what she said, but she sure was adamant about whatever it was. We dubbed that stool the "soap box" and would say "There goes Erin getting up on her soap box again!" every time she got up there. I wish I had had a Babble-to-English dictionary so that I could translate her impassioned speeches.

This front porch looked out onto a cow pasture. An absolutely gorgeous view. You can't see them in the picture, but there were cows in this pasture.

Gary has this unusual talent where he can bellow just like a cow. When the cows were near the fence, Gary would bellow and all the cows would look up and take notice. I wonder if Gary's bellow sounded like a bull.

This is a wider view of the cabin and front porch.
And this is the inside of the cabin.

As I mentioned earlier, there was (is) a deer preserve on the other side of the road. The cabin operator had automatic deer feeders on the property that activated at dawn and dusk. I think the deer could hear the noise of the feeders and knew it was time to go get some free food. It was a great photo opportunity.

The picture below shows a mama deer and her two fawns. So cute!

My best friend spent her honeymoon there and they go back often. I have never been, but from your pictures and the way she described it too, it seems like a very relaxing and beautiful place to visit!

This looks like a great vacation.

If you ever get that Babble-to-English dictionary translated I'd like to have a copy. I have a granddaughter who has me stumped. And could you possibly get the work done within the next 6 weeks? The girl is coming to stay with us for 10 days while her parents are in Europe. :)

My husband and I just visited Fredricksbug back in December as a late anniversary trip (without kids!) but that cabin looks perfect for a family stay.

I love the town and all the history. Not to mention the German food!
